Gerolamo INDUNO (1825-1890) "Alpine Castle Overlooking Village and River"
Born in Milan in 1825, died in 1890. Enrolled at the Accademia di Belli Arti di Brera to study under Luigi Sabatelli, then left to participate in uprising against Austrian rule in 1848. Joined the defense of Rome in 1849, enlisted for Crimean War in 1855, and then fought for Garibaldi in campaign of 1859. Upon his return to Milan he received many commissions for Italian patriotic themes and portraits of important figures of the Risorgimento, including Victor Emmanuel II. In Vienna, he was awarded a medal in 1873. Member of the Academy in Milan. Also known for scenes of contemporary everyday life and costume pieces in 18th century settings. THOMAS FRANCIS WAINEWRIGHT (1794-1883) Oil Painting
Thomas Francis Wainewright was a landscape painter who lived in London. He was a prolific painter who exhibited over 200 works at Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1832 and 1862, the British Institution and elsewhere. Works at the Royal Academy include many landscape sketches and studies. An example of his work is on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Benezit, vol.14, pg. 395.

Adrien Godien (b. 1873) "Bouquet of Red Flowers in a Blue Vase"
Born in Lyon, France in 1873, Godien began his studies at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in 1888 studying with Tony Tollet, Carrand and Vernay. In 1896 he began exhibiting his works at the Salon in Lyon and then in Paris in 1899. A painter of portraits and Lyonnais Cityscapes, he also worked on engravings, book illustrations, fabric and tapestry designs, and designs for iron light fixtures. Listed in Benezit, vol. 6.

Louis Claude PAVIOT French Landscape Oil on Board
Louis Claude Paviot was born in Lhuis in the Ain region of France in 1872. He studied in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens and Doucet. A painter of landscapes, Paris and Lyon cityscapes, nudes, and floral still-lifes. He joined the Societe Lyonnais des Beaux Arts in 1896, exhibiting with them after the turn of the century. A friend of Matisse, Renoir, Bonnard, and Denis, he exhibited with them at the Salon des Independants in Paris. Benezit vol. 8, pg. 173; and Hardouin-Fugier's "La Peinture Lyonnaise au XIXe Siecle."

Her work demonstrates a carefully constructed, refined and figurative form. It follows the pure tradition of the Flemish landscape painters. On the one hand the artist's work strives towards authenticity, and on the other towards lyric and realistic reflection of her relationship to nature. Her sensitivity gains the upper hand with a magical radiation of fairy-like softness.

Country French Antique Painted Comtoise Grandfather Clock
This French eight-day case clock is a weight-driven, pendulum clock. The heavily ornamented pendulum and clock bonnet are typical of the region. Comtoise clocks, also known as Morbier clocks or Morez clocks, are a style of longcase clock made in the French region Franche-Comte (whence their name). Production of these clocks began in 1680 and continued for a period of about 230 years. Features distinguishing this style are a curving "potbellied" case and a greater use of curved lines.

On the left side, a plaque depicts a man leaning on a column and globe, the symbols for architecture and geography. On the right, a woman, representing Liberty, looks on while leaning on a column adorned with a laurel leaf crown. Four rosettes made up of oak leaves and acorns represent knowledge.

Antique Sculpture

French Bronze Sculpture of a Pair of Hounds After Thomas-Francois Cartier (1879-1943). 20th c. Casting inscribed Cartier.
Born in Marseilles, France. Studied under Georges Gardet and specialized in animal sculpture. Created many models of lions, tigers and hunting dogs. Cartier started exhibiting at the Salon in 1904. He won Honorable Mention in 1908 and a Gold Medal in 1927. Listed in Benezit and in P. Kjellberg, Bronzes of the 19th century.

Italian Antique Bronze "Mercury" Sculpture After Giambologna
"Mercury with Caduceus" Bronze sculpture (measuring 61 inches high) was originally executed by Gian Bologna (1524 - 1608) circa 1560 and is currently at the National Gallery in Florence, Italy. This recasting dates from the XIX century and it comes from the workshop of celebrated bronze founder, Benedetto Boschetti. Mr. Boschetti established his shop in Rome at Via Condotti #74 around 1820 and he remained active until his death in 1870. The Boschetti workshop was known for exceptional quality of copies, in bronze and marble, of classical antiquity sculptures in museums, as well as mosaic pieces. Stamped at base: B. Boschetti, Roma.

"Cattails" Metal Sculpture Attributed to Curtis JERE circa 1968
Curtis Jere was the name chosen by a design team composed of Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels, who marketed their works between the late 1950s and 1980s through the company Artisan House. Together they created exquisite metal wall sculpture designs and produced them by hand in their studio. As the demand increased and their creations gained more popularity they started to employ skilled craftsmen to produce their designs for them, all to their very exacting standards. Early Curtis Jere sculptures have now become extremely fashionable and much sought after by collectors and aficionados, as they work perfectly in contemporary interiors.

The tondo (circular painting) was popular in Renaissance Florence for private apartments. Raphael has carefully planned his composition to complement the shape, with the Christ Child at its centre, and created a supremely harmonised and balanced relationship between the three figures. This is one of several variations on the theme of the Virgin and Child and the Holy Family that Raphael explored during his four years in Florence. The palm tree, flowers and fountain or well-head may be inspired by references in special devotions (litanies) to the Virgin Mary, which would be appropriate for a private devotional picture. On display at the Scottish National Gallery.

The "ecole d'auteuil" was a group of impressionist ceramists producing in the area of Auteuil, in the 16th Arrondissement, just outside of Paris at the end of the 19th century. The TLF monogram is attributed to Theodore Le Front. Auteuil has a history of artistic affiliations, most notably as the one-time home of Victor Hugo and Molière, and the birthplace of Marcel Proust.

Whiting & Davis is one of the oldest costume jewelers in the U.S. According to Fred Rezazadeh, author of COSTUME JEWELRY A Practical Handbook & Value Guide, the firm started as a chain company owned in by William Wade and Edward P. Davis. In 1907 C.W. Whiting became a partner, then full owner. They are known as silversmiths and also for their invention of a machine that could produce the fabulous mesh bags. Throughout the 20th century they produced costume jewelry, the most popular, besides the mesh necklaces, being their huge bangles and fabulous cameos, reproduced from antique styles. Early marks for chains include W.C. Co, for Whiting chain company; also W. & D. On most of their costume jewelry you will find Whiting & Davis Mesh Bags or Whiting & Davis in a cartouche.
