Gerolamo INDUNO (1825-1890) "Alpine Castle Overlooking Village and River"
Born in Milan in 1825, died in 1890. Enrolled at the Accademia di Belli Arti di Brera to study under Luigi Sabatelli, then left to participate in uprising against Austrian rule in 1848. Joined the defense of Rome in 1849, enlisted for Crimean War in 1855, and then fought for Garibaldi in campaign of 1859. Upon his return to Milan he received many commissions for Italian patriotic themes and portraits of important figures of the Risorgimento, including Victor Emmanuel II. In Vienna, he was awarded a medal in 1873. Member of the Academy in Milan. Also known for scenes of contemporary everyday life and costume pieces in 18th century settings.
